Lero Lero com Blah Blah Blah

Após mais um longo tempo sem escrever no blog, estou de volta. Antes, uma rápida atualização do que está acontecendo por aqui…

Exatamente 1 semana após meu retorno do Canadá, em Maio, comecei na Lápis Raro.

Lá, tive o prazer de, por cerca de 4 meses, trabalhar com feras da WEB, publicidade e comunicação em geral. A Lápis é cotada como uma das top10 agências WEB do Brasil segundo revistas e profissionais da área e certamente uma das principais players da publicidade aqui em Minas Gerais.

Pelo pouco tempo que fiquei por lá posso confirmar que realmente, eles mandam muito bem! Não só a WEB, mas TODA a equipe! Valeu demais! Trabalhar na Lápis era um sonho, agora realizado!

Infelizmente… nem sempre o timing das coisas coopera com nossos planos futuros. Recebi a proposta do André Mariano para me juntar à equipe Metasys Linux/Syst. Tal proposta foi de encontro com minha vontade de mudar de área (afinal, lá se vão cerca de 7 anos na dobradinha mais web que sysadmin), trabalhar diretamente com Software Livre, estudar para certificações, me preparar para meu plano de longo prazo, conquistar a Oceania e eliminar o exército azul…

Pois bem, no momento estou fazendo treinamentos para a SEE-MG (Secretaria de Estado da Educação de Minas Gerais). Tenho a oportunidade de conhecer de perto laboratórios LTSP em diversos colégios públicos, e fazendo treinamento de informática básica para professores e funcionários da Educação. Até hoje já foram mais de 120 alunos, e crescendo.

Já teve casos, por exemplo, de no intervalo das aulas, três jovens estudantes, de cerca de 13 anos, me pedirem para usar o computador…

Eu perguntei: “Orkut? Não né? Orkut eu não deixo!!”
Ele disse: “Não, professor. Quero acessar um site pra pedir CDs de linux pro meu amigo. Pedi pra mim já, porém demora muito…”
Eu: “CDs do Ubuntu Linux?”
Ele: “Sim! Como você sabe?”

Mal sabia ele que eu sou membro da comunidade! Foi muito bom ver meninos dessa idade interessados em Software Livre. Lógicamente passei meus contatos, alguns cds gravados com a última versão e mostrei os sites da comunidade nacional pra eles. E a comunidade cresce…

Então é isso. Estou me organizando para voltar com força total! Em breve algumas novidades… Se ligue

My friend Prof. Leocádio, UNI-BH University teacher and a well known Open Source enthusiast in my province (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and country gave me the hint of this amazing piece of software. He published some articles on his blog (sorry, portuguese only) giving some tips on how to properly install and use it.

On iTALC website, the project describes it selfs as:

iTALC is a use- and powerful didactical tool for teachers. It lets you view and control other computers in your network in several ways. It supports Linux and Windows 2000/XP (Vista support will come) and it even can be used transparently in mixed environments!

Some of the features are:

• see what’s going on in computer-labs by using overview mode and make snapshots
• remote-control computers to support and help other people
• show a demo (either in fullscreen or in a window) – the teacher’s screen is shown on all student’s computers in realtime
• lock workstations for moving undivided attention to teacher
• send text-messages to students
• powering on/off and rebooting computers per remote
• remote logon and logoff and remote execution of arbitrary commands/scripts
• home-schooling – iTALC’s network-technology is not restricted to a subnet and therefore students at home can join lessons via VPN-connections just by installing iTALC client

O meu amigo Ricardo Leocádio, Professor da UNI-BH, entusiasta do software livre e uma das principais referências da área em Minas Gerais me pediu para publicar uma série de artigos que ele vem trabalhando.

Trata-se do iTALC. Nas palavras do próprio Prof. Leocádio:

Descobri um software fantástico para uso em laboratórios e sala de treinamento. O seu nome é iTALC. Observei também que o mesmo possui pouco material escrito em inglês e em português então, resolvi escrever. Até agora publiquei 4 matérias no meu blog de como utilizá-lo . Criei até mesmo um tutorial em PDF ensinando o uso da última versão

As funcionalidades principais do software são:

• Ver o que está acontecendo nos computadores do laboratório usando o modo Visão Geral e tirando “fotos” da tela;
• Controle remoto dos computadores para dar apoio e ajuda para os alunos;
• Exibe uma demonstração (tanto em tela cheia como numa janela) da tela do professor na tela de todos os alunos em tempo real;
• Travar estações dos alunos, para que a atenção seja focada no professor;
• Envio de mensagens de texto para os alunos;
• Liga, Desliga e reinicia os computadores remotamente;
• Login e Logoff remote, e execução de comandos e scripts arbitrários;
• Escola em casa -A tecnologia de rede do  iTALC’s não se restringe a subredes. Sendo assim, os estudantes podem entrar em sessões à partir de casa através de conexões VPN, simplesmente instalando o cliente iTALC;

Long time no blog!

For those who doesn’t know, I already got back from Canada, and settled in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

I arrived on 11th May, and 1 week later I was already working on a company that I can’t say right now… but I assure I’ll tell it later!

Canada is definetly a place that i would like to live on! I loved each inch I saw, and I enjoyed everybody I met! Hope to live there some day… (more on this later!)

Muito tempo, nenhum post!

Pra quem não sabe, eu já voltei do Canadá e já estou “instalado” em Belo Horizonte, Brasil.

Eu cheguei no dia 11 de maio, e 1 semana depois já estava trabalhando em um lugar que mais tarde eu falarei.

Canada é, sem sombra de dúvidas, um lugar que eu gostaria de morar! Eu adorei cada pedacinho que vi, e curti todo mundo que conheci! Espero morar lá algum dia… (mais sobre isso depois!)

Fabián Rodríguez invited and We (my girlfriend and I) will attend!

Unfortunately, I can spend my French in 15 seconds (je mapele Duda. Je ne parle pas français! je coupe le fromage avec mon main droite), so I will not be able to talk in French with our Québécois fellows… Sorry about that

But guess what? I do have some Brazilian Ubuntu T-shirts (four, to be more precise) and  I will be willing to give them away to the brave Ubuntu users who attend to our meeting.

I will arrive in Montreal around day April 22th or 23th, and will stay in Chambly, on my relatives house. As the party will be on a bar (which implies in drinking beer and getting a little drunk till late), it will be a little complicated to come back to Chambly. So if anyone are going to that side after the party or wants to receive a nice Brazilian couple to stay over night at their place, I would appreciate it a lot!

Tomorrow I am hitting the road (I mean, the rails, because it will be by train), and on Thursday (April 17th ) I’ll be  arriving in Halifax. I’ll stay on the Hi Hostel for the following days, and after that, heading to Quebec City.

If you are around on these days, let me know!

In a couple days We’ll (my girlfriend and I) start a lifetime trip. We’ll cross Canada from coast to coast with the Canrail pass from Canada Via Rail which will gives us 12 days of train trip within 30 days. When I say “coast to coast“, I really mean it. From Vancouver to Halifax!

As some of you may know, I spent the last 3 months studying the English language in Vancouver, BC, Canada. It was a wonderful experience as I had the opportunity to meet people from all around the world and also boost up my English skills. Time flies when you are having fun! However, its time to get on the road!

If you live on the following cities – Jasper, Winnipeg, Toronto, Hamilton, Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa or Niagara Falls, let me know and I’ll be happy to meet you!

Yeah! One more reason for loving Canada!

As some of you may know, I’m studying the English Language in Vancouver, Canada (Business English and Proficiency). Today, while working on a project for a client in Brazil, I was looking for a way to hear the CBC (I usually hear it on the way for the college on my Generic Ipod).

After accessing their website and going through the regular way, I was unable to hear the radio streaming with mplayer. Googling cbc + linux, I found this article, Adopting Ubuntu… good reading, but not what I wanted. So I googled again for listen+cbc+linux

This time, I found “my precious“: some informations about streaming + cbc + linux/*NIX. But (and there’s always a but) as they are testing the CBC streaming under Ogg Vorbis format, they only let two options to choose for: CBC Radio One, and CBC Radio Two. If you want CBC+Ogg, that’s all you can have. It just works!

On the other hand, you can access the “All url streams page” and see a lot of streaming options (tons of cities and 16 or 32 kbps options). I don’t know why, mplayer neither vlc weren’t able to open it… Totem and Gxine did the trick. Was only a matter of runing the command followed by the streaming url, or going in File, Open Streaming… (or something like this) and pasting the url there.

I would like to let here my sincerely congratulations to the CBC.ca staff for making their content available, using open formats and remembering the *NIX crew. Thank you!
